Griffin's Roost: Insight and Analysis by Jon Connington

Griffin's Roost: Insight and Analysis by Jon Connington

The Round One Run-down.  What's that you say?  Oh.  Got it.

Connington was pleased to see that he had landed in a comfy #8 spot on the leaderboard after Round One, until he saw that his very own lady wife was sitting there at #4. Gods be damned! We can’t have this. Life around the Roost will be impossible.

I’m hoping that she gets busy at work and forgets to go back in to earn extra points by voting in the upcoming rounds. Meantime, let’s take a look at who lived and who died.

Jon Snow 96% over Missandei 4%

Hail to you, Missandei voters. Wherever ye be. You must have really loved Missandei. Or hated Jon.

Robb 61% over Ramsay 39%

The Stark bloodline won it for Robb over the charismatic and vicious Ramsay but not by much! He was too dull for many voters I guess, and too daft, and he died too long ago. He’s still alive but not for long. Round 1 was his Whispering Wood; I think we can all agree. Google it if you need to.

Tormund 73% over Khal Drogo 27%

Battle of the bearded beefcakes. I was surprised by this wide split. Not a lot of Aquaman fans on Bracket Breaker! Or, maybe Tormund’s recent story about suckling on the teat of a giantess was just too appealing.

Ned 66% over Theon 34%

Closer than I expected. Theon-lovers did not show up in strength. And as I’ve noted, Ned should have had even more supporters. I’m torn between A) applauding those 66 percenters who understand that Eddard/Sean Bean is the beating heart that still pounds away inside the show’s ribcage, and B) insulting the mothers of anyone who voted for Theon freaking Greyjoy over Ned Stark.

Arya 96% over Margaery 4%

Totally intrigued by whoever voted for Margaery here. Clerical error?

Bronn 55% over Samwell 45%

I’m a big Bronn guy in the show’s universe and a big Sam guy in the book universe, so this was a weird one for me.  Book-Sam deserved better, but Show-Sam deserved to go down here. Tight one.

Olenna 67% over Tywin 33%

Shocking! Folks, was Olenna THAT cool? Some witty barbs, Joffrey’s murder, some great acting. But--Charles Dance! The Lord of Casterly Rock! That time he skinned that elk on camera in real time in his field tent! Wow. This one cost me some points.

Bran 76% over Joffrey 24%

I want to know about these people who vote for Joffrey. What’s the draw? You just like villains? Lannisters? People who torture animals and women and who go rogue in order to kill Ned? When you vote against Bran you effectively vote against two characters, both Bran the kid, and the blank, mystic Three-Eyed Raven that he becomes. Bran is a Stark boy, Bran has a direwolf, Bran is magic. Aren’t those plusses? To vote for Joffrey you either REALLY dislike Bran or REALLY love Joffrey. To each their own, I suppose.

Daenerys 76% over Davos 24%

Quick brag--I predicted Dany’s failure to really TROUNCE the Onion Knight. The show has not served her well. And now that she was gone full Mad Queen as of the penultimate episode, killing babies and other innocents and almost Arya, I expect the rest of her followers to flee the Khaleesi.

Brienne 69% over Littlefinger 31%

Once again, here’s a match-up in which I want to talk to the people who voted for the loser. What’s the draw here? You really liked Aiden Gillen as Mayor Tommy Carcetti on The Wire? Had to be that. His performance as Peter Baelish was so limited in appeal compared to Gwendolyn Christie’s turn as the Brienne the Beauty.

Sansa 83% over Melisandre 16%

I’m not sure how many people are reading Connington’s column, but it’s clear that not many people are OBEYING Conningon’s column. I made a big case for the Divine Miss M over Simpering Sansa in my May 11 post and let’s just say it wasn’t exactly persuasive with up-voters. On both show and bracket, Sansa Lives.

Jaime 71% over Varys 29%

That 29% percent looks pretty substantial to me. Another surprise. I admire the grit of you Varys supporters out there and I would love to hear from you. Alas, the webmaster has not enabled comments on the Griffin’s Roost column.

Cersei 66% over Ygritte 34%

You know Ygritte was a play-in, right?? Unbelievable. Cersei never gained traction and now she’s dead under a pile of very big rocks under the ruins of the Red Keep.

Hodor 50.38% over Night King 49.62%

Hodor by a HAIR. So unbelievably close. Character design on that Night King sure is cool, but he died WEAK and Hodor had so much charm. Glad he pulled it out.

Hound 88% over Catelyn 12%

Catelyn is pretty much immune front the Stark Bump from which her progeny invariably benefit. Y’all treated her like a real Tully in this bracket. Book-readers know that she has a second life, if it can be called that, as Lady Stoneheart. After the Freys cut her throat and dump her in the river, she is brought back by the Brotherhood and leads them, a silent, reanimated corpse driven by revenge. If the show had given us that character Cat would have whipped the Hound.

Tyrion 88% over Jorah 12%

The penultimate episode had Tyrion moping around and oozing crocodile tears just as he did for so long in Mereen. As with Dany, the show has taken its eye off this ball, and it will be to their detriment. Still, Tyrion is a rock-solid one-seed and it’s just plain weird that Jorah even took that 12%.

MAKE SURE YOU VOTE TO DECIDE WHO WILL KEEP ADVANCING TO THE IRON 8.
